When a Stranger Crosses Your Path

walking a path in sedro-woolley

My focus was fairly intent this morning. I packed up to go and acknowledged the person sitting across from me. He had been watching me and wondered how my homework was going. I smiled and told him that yes I was keeping busy. We exchanged a few more words, my pack was filled and off I went after shaking his hand and wishing him a good day.

As the door closed behind me I had one of those moments where I suddenly realized I had just met an incredible person. My task list pulled me forward and as I drove to the office I breathed a prayer, “Lord help me to cross paths with that man again - soon!” I wonder what I would have done if I was not living here and allowing my cultural cues to direct my steps instead of the internal messenger telling me to stop - slow down - give this person your time. He was 70 but had that spark in his eye showing you he was much younger inside. He said he wasn’t retired and that he woke up each day with plenty to look forward to. He enjoyed each sip of his coffee. He watched people coming and going and was enjoying the momentary break in his day.

I am in my office at the moment and just about to head out to another item on my list. I wonder if I will see him, and what I will say/do next time we meet. I know each person I encounter is treasured by the Creator - I just wonder if they know that and if they sense that when they encounter me.
