Turkish Haircut

So Dave and I felt the need to loose a little extra fluff around the ears. Walking into the barber we saw close to the Aya Sophia Dave says,
“Give us a haircut and make us look like a Muslim Turk!”

There was a good laugh as the three men including the barber eyed us curiously.
“Why do you want to look like a Turk?”
“Ok”, one guy says, “the first thing we’ll do is apply this lotion to your skin! ;-)
“You’ve come to the right place,” another says, “my friend (the guy with the razor and scissors) he’s the butcher!! :-) ” Ha Ha!
“You,” the other guy says to Dave, “already look like a Muslim – a Saudi!!”

So a few more laughs as the clipping proceeded. The sweat had been non-stop since stepping on the airplane so a few ounces of hair gone from head and face and I was feeling a lot better. At one point in the process I was motioned to – implying that I needed to lean my head into the sink immediately in front of the chair. As I did the water was turned on and my whole head began receiving a cleaning. Not expected but it was very welcome – left one feeling cool, clean and ready for more sweat!

A few days later Dave – whose head was already shaved very short – proceeded to locate another barber. Apparently the first barber had left one step out and this older more experienced barber proceeded to remove the fringe on Dave’s ears with a large propane fueled flame! Dave talked about finding a barber again… but I think the previous one left nothing for another barber to do for a while!

Moral of the story – do the barber next time you step into a country not your own – if you dare! You are guaranteed a cultural experience that may scar you for life!
Actually – Ginger likes the cut and says we ought to fly back there so she can learn the technique ;-)
